Mental Health Lessons I've Learned--Goodbye to HealthyPlace

November 21, 2017 Ashley Horsfall

I've learned strong lessons in mental health while writing for HealthyPlace, but it's time to say goodbye. Discover what I've learned and share your progress.

The mental health lessons I've learned while writing for HealthyPlace will serve me well as my life changes. I am not a stranger to major life changes. I've undergone quite a few in the last few years, and there are about to be a few more. For this reason, I have to say goodbye to HealthyPlace this week, but not before sharing my mental health lessons and asking you for yours.

I have so much happening in the coming months. I will be traveling to Germany, moving to a new state, and completing my degree program. I'm also expanding my horizons in my writing career, and I find there are just too few hours in my day to get it all done.

That being said, I have been able to discover many new things about myself while writing for HealthyPlace. I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to share my experiences with mental health. I hope that you will be able to share your experiences with mental health progress over the last year.

Mental Health Lessons I've Learned

I've Learned to Recognize My Progress

When I look back over the last few years, months, and weeks, I see the extensive progress I have made. I feel real happiness now, which is not something I could have said a few years ago. I see myself growing into the "real person" I always wanted to be. No longer do I feel helpless.

I've Learned That I Can Handle My Emotions

For a long time, I thought that emotions were meant to control every decision I made. This way of thinking led me to behave with instability at times. My own lack of control led me to believe that this was normal and that I did not need to approach decision-making from another viewpoint.

I've Learned That I Can Let Go

I spent a lot of the last five years grasping for something that doesn't exist. The past is gone, and it is not my responsibility to carry it on my back anymore. When I can't change something, there is no sense in dwelling on it or lamenting the fact. I have the power to choose present and future over past.

I've Learned I Have a Lot to Learn

While I have made so much progress recently, I still have a long road ahead of me. I hope that I continue to grow as I approach my next ventures.
