Adult ADHD and Co-morbid Depression
What a happy sounding title for this blog post - not! It's important, though, to know that Adult ADHD does not live in a vacuum all the time and that other goodies (aka co-morbid disorders) can hop on the band wagon of your mental health. For me, it's co-morbid depression.
I don't always pick up immediately when my depression is rearing its ugly head - I miss the signs all the time. A sign I never miss, though, is napping. Once I start to want naps and actually start to take those naps, I know my depression is back.
Currently, I want to take naps. I would like to take naps from the moment I wake up until the moment I fall asleep, and I'm still not able to be anything other than extremely sleepy! So, what do I do?
First off, I don't allow myself to nap. Napping is a double-edged sword for me - a sign that I'm depressed and something that allows my brain to take my depression to the next level if I let it.
Second, I exercise. I'm not always great at this one, because my ADHD-self kicks in and tells me exercise is boring. It helps, though, when I ramp up the intensity and force myself to exercise. It doesn't rid me of depression for the long haul, but for a good twenty minutes afterwards, I feel better.
