Self-Harm and Death: Appreciate the Life You Live

December 5, 2013 Jennifer Aline Graham

Life is fragile. Embrace life. Life is worth living.

You may have heard those statements more than a million times and even though they sound cliché, they are very true. Every moment, someone dies. I may not know the statistics, but people die at frightening rates. Whether it is from disease, old age, an accident or suicide, every life is worth cherishing.

A Celebrity’s Death: Gone in the Blink of an Eye

Paul Walker's recent death brought forward thoughts on why life needs to be appreciated and embraced.
In this audio blog, you hear about the death of Paul Walker. He was an actor best known for his role in Fast and the Furious. Sadly, I never watched the movies (feel free to judge me). However, the fact that he died so quickly and that his body has been said to be unrecognizable, scares me.

Death is a scary thing and can happen in a second. That is why you need to appreciate the life you have. Realize that self-harm will not help you move toward a safe future. Realize that suicide would only be a selfish act. Realize that you are worth living for.

I have enjoyed many of your posts. This one, however, I must take exception to your statement about suicide being "selfish." This was the message I was fed from my family for years and years....well, when I really was able to look at the situation more objectively - I have concluded it is only "selfish" in that it transfers the pain being experienced by the person who suicides to the people closest to that person. I might suggest that the real "selfishness" lays in those very same close friends and family who did not recognize the severe and life-ending pain that the person was in. Really suicide is simply the result of a lack of coping skills that can surmount the pain (physical and emotional and spiritual) being felt at a particular moment. It is not a selfish act; it is a desperate act.

Hmm it seems like your website ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up
what I wrote and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole
thing. Do you have any points for beginner blog writers?
I'd definitely appreciate it.
