About Angela E. Gambrel: Author of "Surviving ED" Blog
I am a 45-year-old woman on a journey of recovery from anorexia. I also am: a writer, a graduate student studying for my master's degree in English Composition and Communication at Central Michigan University, a wife and mom to my beautiful cat, Aliena, and a very curious person!
I write about my recovery from the perspective of someone who developed an eating disorder later in life at the age of 41. I am interested in a variety of writing genres, particularly blogging and creative non-fiction, and plan to use my writing skills and degree to advocate for people with eating disorders and bring about awareness of and the need for affordable and effective treatment for these illnesses.
I am writing my memoir about my struggles with anorexia nervosa and my work towards recovery after multiple hospitalizations and anorexia treatment at a partial hospitalization program this spring. I also write about my experiences with anorexia on my personal blog, "Leaving ED," at angelaelackey.blogspot.com and through a variety of research and creative non-fiction pieces for graduate school classes.
I finally made the decision to recover after hitting "my rock bottom" in August, when my husband and I temporarily separated for one month because of my anorexia. I credit God, my husband, and a very caring eating disorders psychiatrist for helping me through the continued ups and downs of recovery from anorexia nervosa. I gather strength daily by remembering these words from my doctor: "You are more than your body size, and have so much to offer the world."

I have had anorexia since age 14. I am now 56. I am also in relapse, which I have been since leaving treatment after five months. I am at the point where I no longer believe that recovery is possible. I have finally found a job, but it is only part time, and I now realize how much the eating disorder has stolen from my life.
Any feedback you wish to give would be welcome. I thank you for your honesty and courage in sharing your story.
