Staying Strong Through Verbal Abuse

August 26, 2021 Cheryl Wozny

Facing verbal abuse can be traumatic and exhausting, especially if it is ongoing. However, if you are the victim of verbal abuse, staying strong and being resilient can give you the power you need to move through a difficult situation and towards a healing path.

Staying Strong Through Verbal Abuse Despite Feeling Weak or Powerless

It is difficult to stay strong during verbal abuse and the relationships that include it. Many victims of verbal abuse feel weak or powerless in the situation, but there is more strength and courage there than they realize. It takes a great deal of energy and determination to continue to face each day even when the threat of an abuser is present.

Consequently, victims are often far more powerful than the abuser but are scared into feeling inferior to keep them submissive. Anyone suffering the effects of verbal abuse must realize that they do have control over their own body and mind, no matter what someone else tells them.

Finding Someone to Listen

Part of the challenge of breaking free from verbal abuse is finding someone to listen to your story. Many victims are hesitant to share intimate details of their abuse with close friends, relatives, and even strangers. This fear can be due to several elements, including:

  • They don't think anyone will believe them.
  • They believe the abuse is their fault.
  • They are afraid it may invite similar abuse from others.
  • They fear worse repercussions from the abuser.
  • They don't think it will change in the situation.

Finding someone who will listen to your story without judgment is an important step in finding your strength and courage. If you have tried talking to someone close to you and they are not receptive to your situation, do not spend any more time trying to convince this person of your circumstances.

Seeking Help to Stay Strong in a Verbally Abusive Relationship

When you first start looking for guidance when facing verbal abuse, you may find some obstacles. For example, the local resources may be few, or there could be some financial challenges to obtaining counseling, depending on where you live. However, try to not let these hurdles keep you from seeking the help you require to break free from a verbally abusive situation

Everyone deserves a chance at a healthy and happy life, free from abuse. Unfortunately, moving away from an abusive environment and healing will not happen overnight. Sadly, the side effects can last long after leaving an abuser behind. The path you need to take for better mental health may not be a smooth one, but it will be worth it in the end.

Find your inner strength, use your voice to find someone who will listen to your story, and take it one day at a time. You will be glad you did.
