How to Stay Positive in a Negative World
Staying positive in this negative world is an important part of living a blissful life. Election seasons brings the need for this to the surface. I've learned a few ways to stay positive without letting negativity take up my time.
Stay Positive by Not Taking Things Personally
I am a single mother with a low income and a mental illness. All I have to do is turn on the news or browse through my Facebook newsfeeds and I can find something that offends me.
Bernie Sanders makes a joke about mental illness.
Someone in the state legislature makes a comment about two parent families being better than single parent home.
Someone uses the word bipolar as an adjective.
I get offended easily. I’m one of those people. But I’ve learned not to take these offenses personally. This helps me stay positive and keep things in perspective. If you need help with this, I recommend reading the post, How to Stop Taking Things Personally.
Stay Positive by Avoiding Negativity
Life is full of challenges that make it difficult to stay positive—especially when you have a mental illness. In order to stay positive in a negative world, I avoid gratuitous negativity. I don’t watch cable news. I don’t hang out with people who are chronically negative. I don’t read the comments sections on stories—with the exception of my own blogs. I avoid the negativity.
Now, this doesn’t mean that I don’t care about what’s going on in the world or that I won’t be there for a friend who is going through a tough time. What it means is that I put a priority on my own happiness and positivity. And you should too. Don’t feel guilty about avoiding negativity.
Focus on the Positive to Stay Positive
It’s easy to get blindsided by all the negativity in the world. Sometimes it’s even easy to get blindsided by the negativity in your own life. When you find your mind filled with disheartening thoughts, take a moment to focus on the positives. If you feel like there isn’t much to be positive about—take the time to think of something. If you are having trouble, try mediation or a breathing exercise to help clear your mind.
Focusing on positivity is the best way to ensure that you will stay positive in this negative world.
