Addiction Relapse Prevention: Play That Tape to the End
Addiction relapse prevention includes playing that tape to the end. Drug addiction is a difficult thing to live with; our brains often want to relapse. We have a tape in our heads that remembers the "fun" we had in active addiction--the rush of the substance, the camaraderie we felt with other users, and so forth (The Allure Of The Addiction Culture And Lifestyle). In my Alcoholics Anonymous group, we have a saying--play that tape to the end. his is how it works.
In other words, remember the bad times--the trips to the psych ward, the visit from the police, the coming down off of the substance, whatever the cost was. This can help with addiction relapse prevention.
In this mental illness recovery video, I talk about addiction relapse prevention and playing that tape to the end. If we are honest with ourselves, we will realize that addiction relapse is not worth it. Who wants to wake up somewhere with no idea how they got there? Who wants to wreck their vehicle? Who wants to wake up next to a complete stranger who was a lot more attractive when the substance was intoxicating?

In my 20’s I had many ‘black-outs’ from too much drinking. Don’t want to ever go back to those days. Today in my 50’s, I have slowed way, way, way, way down on beer drinking. Feeling better. Good luck to all. It can be done through determination and help.
I have heard in many meetings about playing the tape all the way to the end, but someone during a meeting pointed out something I didn't think about. Instead of playing the tape all the way to the end, play the tape at the end only. The reason for that is because during that tapes there were good times and being the addict that I am I can stop at that moment and forget to move on. So when I go straight to the end with being insane, no friends, lost of self and/or living with powerlessness then the bad feelings hit right away and the reason why I am not picking up just for today.
