3 Healthy Habits to Help You Deal with Post-Election, Societal Stress
The presidential election is finally over, but the aftermath might feel triggering. Not everyone is happy with the outcomes. The discontent is made worse by the COVID-19 virus (COVID-19 and How to Cope with Depression) that everyone thought would be under control by now, all the restrictions and subsequent isolation that is still happening because of it, social justice issues, and dealing with mental health stigma. It may seem like our society is a mess, but you can take measures to prevent yourself from feeling like its victim.
You can take measures to improve your mental health and wellbeing despite post-election and greater societal stress.
- Create a self-treatment plan. Mental heath professionals often use treatment plans to help people manage their conditions and get back on track. With the help of a professional or on your own, create a treatment plan to follow every day that will help you manage stress. Include diet, exercise, fun and relaxation, and personal goals.
- Limit substance use. Self-medicating with substance use may help temporarily mask stress and pain, but in the long run, it prevents you from facing problems and can damage both physical and mental health.
- Look for the good. Two or three times a day and before bed, jot down small things that are good in your life. This will expand your perspective to include the good in your life.
Remember that although some things are outside of your control, you do have control over your individual life.

What's It Like to be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)? - Instagram Live
For Heather, being a highly sensitive person caused a lot of suffering in her life. "Depression. Anxiety. Unhealthy relationships. I was completely drained."
On our HealthyPlace Instagram live, Heather discussed the struggles and how her life improved once she began the healing work. Psychologist, Dr. Kristie Norwood, joined the conversation. One thing you might find particularly interesting was her response to a question about how people become an HSP or empath. Watch the interview on what it's like being a highly sensitive person.
