Parents of Eating Disordered Children

Here's what's happening on the HealthyPlace site this week:

Welcoming Laura Collins and New Eating Disorders Blog for Parents

When you hear people talk about eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia, it's usually from the patient's perspective. Unfortunately, says Laura Collins, author of Eating With Your Anorexic, parents often feel marginalized and left out of the eating disorders recovery process. What makes it even more difficult for parents of children with anorexia or bulimia, according to Collins, is that some in the eating disorders treatment community incorrectly blame the parents for the child's eating disorder, leaving the parents feeling extremely guilty for their child's illness.

After personally experiencing these things during her daughter's recovery from anorexia, Laura became a parent activist. And now, her blog, Eating Disorders Recovery: The Power of Parents, dispensing information, insights and advice to parents, is on HealthyPlace.com with new posts appearing every Monday and Wednesday. Laura is also a guest on this Wednesday's HealthyPlace Mental Health TV Show (see below).

How to Comfort the Grieving Child

Despite our best efforts to protect children from hardship and loss, life's tragedies come in many painful varieties. One of the most jarring is the shockingly sudden emotional assault of a close peer's accidental death. Not only can it rupture a child's sense of security, but the grieving process can trigger many issues that children may be unprepared to manage.

How can parents help their child through the grieving process. Dr. Steven Richfield, the Parent Coach, has some suggestions.
