Mental Illness and the Newtown School Shooting

HealthyPlace Mental Health Newsletter

Here's what's happening on the HealthyPlace site this week:

Mental Illness and the Newtown School Shooting

Mental Illness and GunsAfter the horrible school shooting in Newtown, CT, and the burial of the child victims of Adam Lanza, it is time this country has a national conversation about mental illness. We do not know, for sure, if Adam Lanza had a diagnosed mental illness. Various news reports indicate that he was a deeply troubled young man and that he had seen mental health professionals at various points in his life.

As a leading provider of trusted mental health information, we, at HealthyPlace, strongly feel it is important for every American to clearly understand:

For most Americans, their only real understanding of mental illness is watching “a crazy person on the news” after some violent crime has taken place or occasionally running into a mentally ill person who is homeless. As we all know, this is not the typical person living with a mental illness.

Included in the conversation, we should address:

  • the lack of funds for mental illness treatment
  • the stigma of mental illness which, among other things, prevents people from getting the treatment they need
  • whether people with severe mental illnesses should have access to guns

Several of our mental health bloggers express their thoughts on these issues. You'll find their stories listed further down in this newsletter. You can find comprehensive information on mental illness, mental health here.
