Stop Feeling Jealous, Start Feeling Appreciative
How do you stop feeling jealous? After all, jealousy is part of the human experience. However, when jealousy results in destructive thoughts and behaviors, that's when it's time to assess the situation.
Dealing with Jealousy and Mental Illness
When you struggle with overwhelming emotions due to mental illness, your world may be constantly spinning around you. At times, you may not understand why you feel a certain way or why you can't snap out of a funk. While some emotions can be altered with medication and mental health therapy, others are simply part of being human – such as jealousy.
How to Stop Feeling Jealous
Jealousy can center around relationships, other people's success, lifestyle or maybe their strengths. Usually, when you get right down to it, jealousy revolves around our own insecurities. (Stop Feeling Insecure) When you feel jealous, consider whether you feel threatened in some way or "not good enough".
Here are 3 steps to deal with jealousy:
- Recognize and accept your jealousy. Doing that will reduce its power over you.
- Define why you're jealous. When you know what you're jealous about, you can do something about it.
- Let your jealousy go. Literally. Don't let it consume your life, let it out of your life. Tell jealousy, "There's no room for you here."
And finally, appreciate your positive traits - who you are and what you have.
When you give in to feeling jealous about a situation or a person, you are not allowing yourself to absorb and embrace the scenario as a whole. Step back and replace that jealousy with appreciation. Appreciate the factors that make you jealous and learn from those people and situations. When you are able to do that instead of letting your jealousy rule you, your environment will become a healthier place to thrive in.
